There is a lot of talent among the Carolinas Chapter’s nearly 600 members. The goal of the newly-created Leadership and Volunteer Development Committee, chaired by Past President, past Legacy Award winner and past Supplier of the Year Linda Ilsley, CMP, is to maximize member involvement, and encourage and train members to serve in leadership positions within the chapter. You may have seen at the last two chapter meetings our committee table, where we provided member profile sheets and volunteer forms. These forms are available on the website (www.mpi-cc.org). By mid-December, the chapter’s Leadership Manual, recently updated by Past President and past Supplier of the Year Andrew Schmidt, CHME, and past Legacy Award winner and past Supplier of the Year Candy Cline, will be posted on the website as well, with detailed descriptions of chapter committee charges and opportunities within the committees for YOU to volunteer.

At the March 20 chapter meeting in Raleigh, part of the educational session will feature a panel discussion of the impact that volunteering can have on one’s career. I can tell you from personal experience that becoming actively involved in your professional association is one of the most important actions you can take to invest in your future! I joined MPI-CC in 1990 as a (relatively) inexperienced supplier, then in 1991 became a (wholly!) inexperienced planner. I quickly was recruited for committee work and then served on the chapter Board of Directors. Surrounding myself with planner and supplier veterans who were committed to our industry served to educate and shape me professionally at least as much, if not more, than attending the great educational sessions that distinguish our chapter.

When you become a dues-paying member, you (or your employer) support the association financially…but when you become an ACTIVE member, the association gives back to you many times over, personally and professionally. If you are not already active, I encourage you to complete the volunteer form on the website and return it to Linda Ilsley. Your talents are needed and there is a place for everyone in our great chapter!
