Certifications and Honors - CMP

Through the CMP program, individuals who are employed in meeting management pursue continuing education, increase their industry involvement, and gain industry-wide recognition. The requirements for certification are based on professional experience and a written examination. Over 14,000 individuals in 36 countries and territories have earned the CMP designation since its inception.

The foremost certification of the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry, the CMP program recognizes individuals who have achieved the industry's highest standard of professionalism. Established in 1985, the CMP credential increases the proficiency of meeting professionals by:

• Identifying a body of knowledge;
• Establishing a level of knowledge and performance necessary for certification;
• Stimulating the advancement of the art and science of meeting management;
• Increasing the value of practitioners to their employers;
• Recognizing and raising industry standards, practices and ethics;
• Maximizing the value received from the products and services provided by Certified Meeting Professionals.

The CMP Board of Directors includes one representative from each CIC organization. The CMP Board represents the profession's diversity and serve as a voice for stakeholders who have an interest in maintaining a high industry standards.

Who should work toward the CMP designation?

You should apply for a CMP designation if you have:

• Section I
  
  Option 1: Currently or recently employed in the industry (within the previous twelve (12) months) with a minimum of 36 months qualifying full-time work experience.
  
  Option 2: Currently or recently employed in the industry (within the previous twelve (12) months) with a minimum of 24 months qualifying full-time work experience AND holds a bachelor’s degree or international equivalent in meeting, event, exhibition, and hospitality/tourism management. All professional experience and other meeting management activities submitted must have occurred in a professional context, not earned during academic study.
  
  Option 3: Currently a full-time instructor of meeting, event, exhibition or hospitality/tourism management an educational institution or university program with 36 months of full-time experience in academia.
• Section II
  
  Option 1: Completed a structured, supervised internship in meeting, event, exhibition or hospitality/tourism management with a minimum of 200 hours of work experience with a professional organization through an accredited educational institution or university.
  
  Option 2: Completion of 25 clock hours of industry-related continuing education within the past five years. In order to receive credit for continuing education, courses must relate to one of the domain areas of the CMP International Standards (CMP-IS). The CMP-IS is the body of knowledge for the Certified Meeting Professional program and examination

Why should you work toward the CMP designation?

• The recognition from your peers within the industry as well as those with whom you work.
• CMPs are highly visible. They are raising industry standards and increasing the respect and prestige of the meeting profession.
• Studies show CMPs earn up to $10,000 more annually than non-CMPs.

A summary of costs:

• CMP Application Submission Fee - $225 USD
• Exam Registration Fee - $450 USD
• Exam Cancellation Fee - $100 USD
• Recertification Fee (payable each five-year period) - $200 (U.S.)

The CMP Application and Examination

Beginning in the second Quarter of 2012, CIC will be transitoning to computer based testing. The CMP examination will be administered at a secure testing center. Prometric, CIC's testing agency, offers more than 430 testing centers around the world. More information on computer based testing will be on CIC's website in the next few months.

The CMP International Standards (CMP-IS) are the body of knowledge for the Certified Meeting Professional program and examination. The CMP-IS defines and categorizes the skills, competencies and abilities an individual needs in order to be successful in the profession.The CMP-IS represents the most significant enhancement to the CMP body of knowledge since the start of the CMP program in 1985.
