MPI-CC INTRODUCES THE CATHERINE VORON LECTURE SERIES ON ETHICS & PROFESSIONALISM IN MEETING MANAGEMENT

Catherine Voron, CMP, CMM, was a member of MPI-CC for 19 years, and served on the Board of Directors from 1996-98, 2002-03, and 2009 until her untimely death on January 21, 2010. She received the Chapter Planner of the Year (1998) and Legacy (2004) Awards for her many contributions to the Chapter and to the industry. A champion for continuing professional education, Catherine was one of the first members in the Chapter to earn both the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation and the Global Certification in Meeting Management (CMM). Catherine served as a mentor for countless newer and aspiring meeting professionals and donated her services to several CMP study groups. She was a strong advocate for our industry; she held dear and embodied MPI's Principles of Professionalism in both her professional and personal life.

Catherine was the Meeting Professional for the Burroughs Wellcome Fund in Research Triangle Park for 20 years. The Burroughs Wellcome Fund named one of its meeting rooms after Catherine in her honor in a ceremony on March 22.

Upon Catherine's death, several of her MPI-CC colleagues expressed a desire to establish some fitting memorial to Catherine's many contributions that would exist beyond the lifetime of her colleagues. The task force that was appointed by MPI-CC president Marla Amann, CMP quickly agreed that instituting something for the Chapter in Catherine's name that focused on ethics and continuing professional education was an appropriate way to achieve this. The task force recommended instituting an annual lecture series specifically devoted to ethics and/or professionalism topics.

At its March meeting, the Chapter Board of Directors unanimously voted to approve this initiative. Effective immediately, the Chapter will include this topic among its six educational sessions each year.

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is very supportive of the lecture series and has contributed a significant amount to launch the program. We need to grow this fund so that proceeds from the fund may be used to pay for honoraria and expenses for the lecture series each year. According to Chapter president Marla Amann, "All of us who have chosen to make this our life's work owe a debt to Catherine Voron. This is the perfect way to say thank you. I hope you will join me in making a tax-deductible contribution." Please see the link below to the contribution form.

The inaugural Catherine Voron Lecture on Ethics & Professionalism in Meeting Management will be presented at the MPI-CC 2010 Annual Meeting in May. Keynote speaker Terri Breining, CMP, CMM will give a presentation entitled "Ethics - A Discussion in Shades of Gray."
